Your support provides opportunity...
Betsy started at UpReach in 1995, and like so many others who come to the barn, Betsy's family believed that therapeutic riding would help her with balance and coordination. Over time the improvements were obvious, but with a metal rod in her spine, riding was restrictive and required people at her side.
For Betsy to advance her development and increase her independence, therapeutic driving was the answer. Sitting in the cart, Betsy is further away from the horse, allowing her to develop self-awareness, improve balance and stability, and achieve problem-solving challenges. Betsy is safe and in control.
She steps into the cart with assistance and sits next to a certified UpReach instructor. Betsy's lessons involve maneuvering through cones, memorizing a pattern to follow, following directions, and making verbal commands to the horse.
Betsy can come to UpReach all year long to drive the horse and cart, and is now more observant of her surroundings and environment. She says, "Driving is the most fun I've ever had! I can go as fast as I want or as slow as I want."
As Betsy's family learned, UpReach is a unique place that focuses on possibilities, not disabilities. And, Betsy has extended her independent skills to the rest of her life. She can now fix food and pick out clothes all on her own. Her mother is amazed at the progress she's made at UpReach... and at home.
