AHA Inc. Approved Level I Treatment Principles

This four day course is an overview of the principles of hippotherapy, designed for therapists (PT, OT, SLP, PTA, COTS, SLPA) interested in utilizing hippotherapy in his or her practice. Adaptive riding instructors, horse handlers, administrators, and others interested in hippotherapy treatment principles are welcome to attend, teamed with his or her therapist. Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy students must be in his or her last semester of graduate school to be eligible to attend for course credit.
Course attendees will explore the dynamic system of the therapist, patient, horse handler, and horse as is applied in hippotherapy. Topics include:
- The history and development of hippotherapy in the United States
- Understanding bio-mechanical and sensory interaction of horse and human
- Horse selection
- Maximizing effects of equine movement including school figures & movement progression
- Roles of therapy team members
- Safety principles
- Precautions and contraindications
- Patient evaluation
- Business aspects and current research in the effects of equine movement
All attendees will receive a hard copy of AHA, Inc. Level I Treatment Principles Manual. For early registration (on or before September 28, 2018) the cost is $700.00 for an AHA, Inc. member and $775.00 for a non-AHA, Inc. member. After September 28, 2018, the cost is $800.00 for an AHA, Inc. member and $875.00 for a non-AHA, Inc. member. Course fee includes lunch, so if you have any special dietary restrictions please indicate on the registration form. During the four day course, you will be on and/or working directly with horses and should have appropriate clothing and footwear (closed-toe, closed-heel shoes). Helmets will be provided. If your weight exceeds 200lbs, you may be excused from the mounted portion of the course.
Course Prerequisite: Successful completion of the online "Intro to Equine Skills" test reviewing equine care and management. Completion of the test must be at least three weeks prior to the start of the course. Continuing Education: A certificate of attendance will be provided. Contact hours total 27. Courses are not preapproved for CEU's unless indicated otherwise.
Cancellation Policy: AHA, Inc. and UpReach reserve the right to adjust course dates, times, and faculty to accommodate unforeseen circumstances including the cancellation of the course due to insufficient registration up to three weeks prior to the scheduled course dates. Notification will only be made to advanced registrants. Neither AHA, Inc. nor UpReach is responsible for any expenses incurred by registrants due to such adjustments. Participation cancellation requests must be made in writing no less than three weeks prior to the course start date to receive a refund, minus the $115.00 administrative fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations received within three weeks prior to the start of the course.
Travel Information: UpReach is located approximately 30 minutes from the Manchester- Boston Regional Airport (MHT) and 60 minutes from Logan International Airport (BOS). Transportation arrangements to and from the facility will need to be made my participants.
